Google Chrome OS: the biggest threat to Android tablets?

Google Chrome OS could pose a threat to Android upon its release, depending on the decisions of tablet manufacturers. Yesterday we asked if you had the choice between a device running Android and the same device running Google Chrome OS, which one you would pick?

Despite the fact that Google Chrome OS has not yet been officially released, it blew Android out of the water in our poll. 59 per cent of you, almost two thirds of you, voted in favour of Google Chrome OS. In comparison, Android received only 31 per cent of the vote.

What’s making the difference here? Is Google Chrome OS too far away from our prying hands for us to assess properly? Too scant on details? One commenter pointed out that the web-application based Google Chrome OS could intensify issues with data charges and caps, and network issues in the UK if it requires a connection to access any of the apps, saying: “Most of my Android use is on the London Underground, deep below any access to Wi-fi or 3G. I regularly go to remote parts of the French countryside with it. Just imagine the data roaming costs of trying to do that with Chrome.”
Those that voted almost unanimously wanted either Google Chrome OS or an Android OS: less than one per cent said you would choose neither Google Chrome OS or Android. Some of you, nine per cent, were on the fence, perhaps waiting to get a closer look at Google Chrome OS and its data connection requirements, before you decide which you’d prefer.

Rumor Shootout: Google Tablet Will Be Made by HTC — Or Maybe Motorola

Today’s big rumor, coming from an unnamed single source by way of the Download Squad blog, is that a Google tablet, made by HTC, running Google’s Chrome OS, and available on the Verizon network, will go on sale on Nov. 26th this year. That’s Black Friday.
Or, maybe not: Citing similarly unnamed sources among “upstream component makers,” Digitimes asserts that it’s Motorola, not HTC, that is Google’s first choice for a tablet, which Digitimes says will be based on Android.
The Motorola-made Google tablet will utilize Nvidia’s Tegra 2 processor platform, and will have a 10.1-inch Sharp-manufactured LCD that’s not as bright as the iPad, but is thinner, says Digitimes. It will be in production by the end of 2010, the paper added.
Download Squad goes on to speculate about the Chrome tablet’s hardware, writing that “the device could be based on NVidia’s Tegra 2 platform and sport a 1280×720 multitouch display, 2 GB of RAM, minimum 32-GB SSD, WiFi/Bluetooth/LTE connectivity, GPS, webcam, and possibly expandable storage via a multicard reader,” but that is the author’s guesswork. What of the actual “facts” of the story, though?
HTC would make sense. After all, the hardware maker is behind many Android phones, and worked with Google on the original G1 Googlephone. That part lines up.
Motorola would make sense, too, given the company’s big commitment to Android in the past year.
As for Verizon, that too is a pretty credible pairing given the net-neutrality furor of the past couple weeks, which has seen Verizon and Google clubbing together to dismiss the need for an un-tiered internet for mobile devices. That, and the fact that Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam said back in May that Verizon and Google are “working on tablets together.”
And the launch date? Either genius or incredibly dumb. If Google were to make the announcement ahead of time, it would certainly get a lot of headlines due to the sheer ballsiness of launching a product into the morass of hype that is the busiest shopping day of the year. But once those headlines have come and gone, the product actually could get drowned in that morass and just disappear. Consumer electronics meant for strong holiday sales typically debut earlier in the year, giving distributors and retailers time to stock up before the holiday rush begins.
Adding some credibility to the timing is TechCrunch’s report on Wednesday that Google is planning tolaunch the Chrome app store in October. That store, which would give web developers a marketplace for selling web-based applications, might play into the app strategy for an Android-based tablet as well as a Chrome-based one: In addition to native Android apps from the Android Market, tablet users in November would be able to purchase web apps from the just-launched Chrome store. The fact that Google is reportedly planning to charge just 5 percent commission on Chrome apps, versus the 30 percent that Apple charges, suggests Google is gearing up to go after the iPad and iPhone in an aggressive way. (Note: Google also charges a 30 percent transaction fee in its Android Market.)
I really don’t know which way to call this. The pieces all fit so well together, but the sources are odd and unconvincing. Is it possible that Google will launch two tablets this year, one based on Chrome and the other on Android?
Either way, the prospect of an HTC/Verizon/Google tablet or a Motorola/Verizon/Google tablet appeals to us.
What do you think?

Google launching a Chrome OS tablet on Verizon, goes on sale November 26

The title pretty much says it all on this one, folks.

Yes, our source tells us that Google is building a Chrome OS tablet. It's real, and it's being built by HTC. No surprise there, since HTC churned out the Nexus One for Google.

Yes, they plan to offer it in conjunction with Verizon -- which probably doesn't come as a shock to anybody at this point. The two recently tag-teamed that Net Neutrality proposal and they've had plenty of discussions in the past about cooperating in some capacity.

As for the launch date of November 26th, well, that's all kinds of brilliant. It's Black Friday 2010 and the busiest shopping day of the year in the U.S. -- so what better day to have a shiny new tablet in the cabinet at Verizon kiosks and stores all over the country? You can bet Google's Chrome OS tablet will be heavily subsidized, and I'd go so far as to say it will be substantially cheaper than the iPad -- if not totally free -- with a Verizon data contract.

So what will the Google tablet pack for hardware? While our source didn't provide any specifics, my guess is that the device could be based on NVidia's Tegra 2 platform and sport a 1280x720 multitouch display, 2GB of RAM, minimum 32GB SSD, WiFi/Bluetooth/LTE connectivity, GPS, webcam, and possibly expandable storage via a multi-card reader. Again, these were not given to us by our source, but expect it to be every bit as geek-tastic as the Nexus One -- Google won't want to disappoint its early adopters.
